Whilst enjoying our usual Happy Hour at the Wyalkatchem Travellers Park, it was decided that the fire pit should be lit. So, with a unanimous yes vote, Wyalkatchem Travellers Park lit the first fire of the season. As the warmth from the fire washed over all in attendance a debate ensued re cooking over a camp fire. The debate raged for several minutes until it was decided to cook tonight’s dinner over the fire. Whilst the guests departed for their vans, Brendan went to the storage shed and retrieved a hot plate. The guest soon arrived back at the fire with trays of meat and vegetables. Brendan had previously seasoned the hot plate so it was immediately placed over the fire to get hot. Soon there was the smell of cooking meat wafting through the air. The ladies dutifully sat back and watched (with some hints and comments) the men cooking the dinner. There was a vast arrangement of food, several pieces of lamb were soon sizzling on the plate whilst a boerewors was placed on a wire rack. The potatoes were wrapped in foil and placed on the coals and other vegetables were left cooking slowly around the edges of the fire. The usual sausages and steak were also placed on the plate and soon the smells coming from the firepit announced that dinner was indeed ready to be served. After dinner had been consumed and everyone was sitting around holding full tummies, it was decided (possibly by Michelle) that dessert should also be cooked over the coals. So, without hesitation Michelle disappeared and came back loaded with marshmallows, chocolate syrup, crushed nuts and biscuits. Everyone toasted their marshmallows and with much merriment and mess, S’mors were made. There was a resounding yes vote to bring camp ovens for our next open fire meal.
